LubISS Final Conference, 28-30 Sept. 2020 http://www.lubiss.eu/?p=1584 http://www.lubiss.eu/?p=1584#respond Mon, 14 Oct 2019 07:41:35 +0000 http://www.lubiss.eu/?p=1584 We organized an international conference on lubricant impregnated slippery surfaces from 28 to 30 September 2020, at the Gustav Stresemann Institute in Bonn, Germany. It was entitled Wetting Dynamics 2020.

Below you will find:

LubISS final conference program

It brought together experts and young researchers from the fields of wetting and interfacial phenomena, mass and heat transfer, and multiphase flows to discuss the latest advancements, challenges and new perspectives. In particular, we reviewed the wetting dynamics of lubricated, adaptive, flexible, switchable or responsive surfaces. We discussed the underlying mechanisms of the interaction between wetting dynamics, heat and mass transfer. We talked about new advanced experimental and numerical techniques, which enable detailed investigations and control of the wetting dynamics of complex liquids. Based on this cutting-edge knowledge, we will explore and investigate new directions in the field.

This conference, which was originally planned as an on-site event, was turned into a hybrid event due to the 2019 coronavirus pandemic. 100 scientists participated: 57 people decided to travel and were welcomed in person in Bonn. The others 43 attended an all virtual conference.

Our ITN network originally planned to organize a three-day progress meeting in Brussels beginning of 2020. It would have taken place in the Brussels office of the Max Planck Society. We would have used this opportunity to visit the European Parliament (Parlamentarium, the European Parliament Hemicycle, House of European History). Unfortunately, the coronavirus pandemic broke out and prevented us to re‐schedule another meeting in the next future. Therefore, we turned our Brussels meeting into our first “big-scale” virtual meeting.

It took place from 11 to 13 May 2020 as a Zoom meeting. As usual, the ESRs presented the advances made on their respective projects. They also attended a soft skills meeting on “Time management”.

De-icing planes with the “lotus effect” http://www.lubiss.eu/?p=1468 http://www.lubiss.eu/?p=1468#respond Tue, 23 Apr 2019 09:09:06 +0000 http://www.lubiss.eu/?p=1468 In winter, planes have to be deiced before take-off. Indeed, water droplets stick to aluminum surfaces and form icy particles. Researchers – among them Material Scientist Elmar Bonaccurso of Airbus Central R&T – are looking into how this can be prevented and seek environmentally friendly alternatives to chemical or heat deicing. One of the solutions is to make aluminum water-repellent and therefore icephobic with new superhydrophobic coatings. One of these experimental coatings is inspired by a natural phenomenon known as the “lotus effect” where water drops just roll off the surface of the leaves.

Progress meeting in Krefeld, 8-10 April 2019 http://www.lubiss.eu/?p=1460 http://www.lubiss.eu/?p=1460#respond Mon, 18 Mar 2019 09:04:23 +0000 http://www.lubiss.eu/?p=1460 Next progress meeting of LubISS network will be held in Krefeld on 8-10 April 2019. The project investigator Prof. Jochen Gutmann will host the whole group at DTNW (Deutschen Textilforschungszentrum Nord-West). ESRs will present the current status of their research projects and large space will be dedicated to promote discussion and further collaborations.

In addition to the progress meeting, ESRs will have the opportunity to participate to a joint outreach activity. They will take part to the workshop “How to make a scientific video”. It aims to familiarize all ESRs with video recording and video editing and the resulting video will be then finalized and exploited to disseminate the activities of the LubISS’ network in the Web.
